How Witan turns journeys into stories
Witan uses your phone's GPS to recognise where you are and play relevant audio stories automatically. Set your travel mode before you leave, then listen as the places around you come to life.
How the GPS audio guide works
Open Witan
Choose Drive, Walk, Cycle or Rail. Free Guide and Just Drive need no destination.
Start travelling
Witan uses your location to recognise places with stories nearby.
Just listen
Stories play automatically as you approach them. Hands-free, eyes on the journey.
Three ways to use Witan
Free Guide
The simplest way to experience Witan. No destination required, no account needed.
- • Hands-free GPS-triggered historical narration
- • Up to 10 unique places per local calendar day
- • All travel modes included
Just Drive
My GuideStart Witan without entering a destination. Witan follows your live movement and direction.
- • Unlimited stories everywhere
- • Selects relevant history based on where you're travelling
- • Previously heard material is not simply repeated
Journey
My GuidePlan a route with your departure, destination and up to five optional stops.
- • Witan prepares a connected historical narrative for your trip
- • Story arcs that evolve as geography changes
- • Prepared content continues in poor signal
Witan is not a sat-nav. It tells you about places — it does not provide turn-by-turn navigation.
Your journey, your way
Four ways to travel
Witan adapts to how you move. Same stories, different pacing.
Drive
Road trips and everyday journeys. Stories timed for the speed you're travelling.
Walk
Countryside walks and city explorations. More detail, slower pace.
Cycle
Bike trails and touring routes. Adapted for cycling speeds and stopping points.
Rail
Train journeys across Britain. Stories tied to stations and passing landmarks.
Select your mode in the app. Witan adjusts story triggers and pacing automatically.
Designed for real journeys
Every feature exists because travellers need it, not because it looks good in a demo.
One tap to start
Select your travel mode and go. Free Guide and Just Drive need no destination. Journey lets you plan your route.
GPS triggers stories
As you approach locations with tales to tell, audio plays automatically.
Voice-only design
No screens to watch while travelling. Just listen and enjoy the journey.
Works in poor signal
Prepared Journey content continues even where mobile signal drops.
Privacy first
Location used for triggering, not tracking. Your journeys stay private.
Battery efficient
Optimised background location use. Won't drain your phone.
Safe for drivers
Witan is designed for hands-free, eyes-on-road use. Set your mode before you start, then focus on driving. Stories play automatically — no interaction required while moving.
Never operate your phone while driving. Pull over safely if you need to adjust settings.
