Historically Verified
Supported by authoritative evidence and consistent with established historical understanding.
"The Romans built Watling Street as a military highway"
Historically Debated
Evidence is incomplete, sources conflict, or serious historians disagree. Uncertainty is explained calmly.
"Historians disagree about whether this was a temple or a marketplace"
Folklore & Legend
Recorded tradition, folklore or legend — clearly framed as tradition rather than historical fact.
"Local legend tells of a giant who threw these stones"
Natural framing, not mechanical labels
Witan does not mechanically announce a truth label before every story. Instead, uncertainty and folklore are communicated naturally in the narration itself — so you always know what kind of story you're hearing without interrupting the flow.
Why it matters
Britain is full of stories. Some are documented history. Some are traditions passed down for generations. Some are theories historians still debate. And some are pure legend — wonderful to hear, but not meant to be taken as fact.
A good story is better when you know what kind of story it is. Witan's Truth Protocol classifies every story internally, and communicates that classification naturally in how the story is told — debated material sounds debated, folklore sounds like folklore.
We never fabricate content. We never present unverified claims as established fact. And we never shy away from saying "we don't know" when the historical record is genuinely uncertain. Silence is a valid outcome when no truthful, relevant content exists.
